city of heroes: bootleg edition

alright, today i took my girls to best buy to wander around for a little while and drool over stuff.

while waltzing my way through the pc game section i happened upon a giant red box: City of Villians: ...blah blah super mega hyper ultimate some media or another edition with extra crap that you will throw in a box and forget about edition (i think). props for the packaging, very eye catching. it could not however compete with the small grey cd sleeve sitting right next to it, it had an orange sticker. the sticker said free. bonus! this was the city of heroes: bootleg edition. i picked it up, proceded to check out and spend more money than i should have, wandered the rest of the mall for a little while until my kids complained more than usual so we left.

i arrived home, and looked this thing over. it has no markings or indications as to what it is, appears to be the game itself. my guess is that it is probably a free trial or something of the like.

here comes the point (i know you were all waiting)... anyone played this game. i have heard some good things, but have always shied away from the pay for play type games in the past. (i can't stay with most games long enough to really make it worth the reocurring monthly charges, and the few times i tried i found myself trying to play my self to death to make sure i was getting my money's worth.

anyone have any insight on this one?

i am a little concerned with that as it asks for credit card numbers,,, i want to know that the game is worth it first before risking recurring charges ;)

Yeah, anyone can slap a "free" sticker on an item and stick it on a shelf. If that anyone can write an installer that looks like City of Heroes' and phones home with your CC info, you might be out of luck. ;)

well the packaging appears legit, i checked out the coh forums and found they initially made these up to pass out at comic book conventions, a lot of stores have been selling their surplus for a buck. so i am not so much concerned with fraud as i am recurring cc payments for a game that sucks. (i hate cancelling things like this... bleh)

I'm a current subscriber of both City of Heroes and City of Villains. This game doesn't appeal to the wide audience that WoW or MxO does, but it is a very fun. I played WoW and got bored with it pretty quickly - compared to CoH/V the action is so slow.

If you're a fan of comics/superheroes, this game is for you. It's 50 bucks for the game, and 15 bucks a month - you got the bootleg (which is indeed legit) for a dollar, and only have to pay 15 a month (the first month is free). If you buy CoV and add it to your account, you only pay one monthly fee for both games.

Currently, Neither game has true high-end content. CoV has not yet received the full level cap either - CoH is 50, CoV is 40. CoH has quasi-end game content, with one raid - offering the game's only form of 'loot'. To access the raid, you have to be level 45 or higher. The Developers have said that within the next few updates, we (the high levels) will receive a zone specifically for us to do missions/content/whatever.

Me? I'm having a blast with this game. I have two 50s, a 27, and some low teens. I've led several of CoH's raids and have a blast each time. I just picked up CoV recently so my highest is only 14. This is not like other RPGs, though, the classes are different - there are no mages, paladins, whatever else there is in WoW - instead, you've got comic book archetypes: (CoH ->) blasters, scrappers, tankers, defenders, controllers, (CoV ->) brutes, stalkers, masterminds, corruptors, dominators.

If you do decide to play and want some help, roll your character(s) on Pinnacle. I play there, you can contact me on my global handle @MrWhippy. Good luck. ;)

cool... so does the fact that i have thousands of dollars worth of comics make me a comic book fan?

with a glowing review tho, i think i might just have to check it out.

out of curiousity ... is CoV the better game i keep hearing?

A brief overview of the classes:

(CoH ->)
blaster - ie, Wizard. He does long range damage, alot of damage, but is squishy and dies quickly if attacked directly for too long

scrappers - ie Hand to Hand fighter type, whether it be with sword, katana, fists, or spines, he's a high damage output melee type. No long range, abit tougher than other archetypes

tankers - ie the Fighter. He's the paladin of archetypes, can take a huge beating, does decent damage, but nothing long range.

defenders - ie Cleric or Shaman. He's the healer, the buffer, the backup guy. Not all defenders can heal, some give force fields, others do ... other things.

controllers, ie Enchanter types, he can mess with the minds of the enemy, do special effects, turn the tide of battle, isn't very tough, but can be devastating when used by an expert player.

(CoV ->)
brutes - Not exactly a tanker type, this guy builds up rage as he fights. The longer he fights, the more damage he does.

stalkers - Starts off at level 1 with an impervious stealth ability, that is only canceled out when he attacks. Alot like a scrapper in a way, except he has a deadly assasin strike.

masterminds - Pets are this Archetypes strength. The Mastermind himself is usually pretty squishy, but behind his line of pets, he can be a devastating force, whether those pets be mercenarys, ninjas, robots, or undead.

corruptors - Akin to the blaster, the corruptor is a long range damage dealer. He has a special attack called Corruption.

dominators. - Akin to the Controller, but not quite the same type either. He also has a special power, called Domination.

It's almost unfair to compare CoH to CoV because CoH pretty much had the bare essentials when it launched - CoV on the other had built upon what CoH already had. However, if you're looking for a superior game then yes, CoV is it.
