DSL rates

I just received a notice that my DSL service is going up $10 a month making it $44.99. I have the lowest speed 1.5Mbs and this seems too much to me. I might be going back to dial-up. I live in an area where there is only 1 DSL provider and they get to charge what they want.

I was wondering what everyone else is paying. Would you mind posting the rates you pay for DSL please?

$70/mo for 512k/512k. $44.99 for 1.5mb sounds very inexpensive by comparison. My ISP does offer 1.5/1.5... for $200/mo.

$34.99 supposed to be $42.00+, but I complained.
My speeds are poor, but good considering line conditions.

Here is the DSL pricing structure for us here in Northwestern N.C.:

https://www.fastaccess.com/content/cons ... oducts.jsp

We were paying $34.95 a month for the 256Kbps service, but then prices dropped, so we moved to 1.5Mbps service, and the price is $2.00 cheaper per month at the faster speed. They just introduced the 6Mbps service within the last month or so.

Also doing the Verizon 768/128 plan at $15. Only problem I have with it is the line is interleaved by default, I'll have to play the Tech Support game and try to get it switched to fastpath...

I'm on the same ISP, but I just got a $10 cut! from 69.95 to 59.95 NZD (USD 40.00) for my DSL:

2Mb down, 256Kb/s up, 10GB a month.

And Aus-RED-5, it's not a total data cap. If you exceed your monthly data traffic allowance, the system drops your port speed to 128/128 Kb/s until the start of the next period, when it is automatically raised again. I have never hit more than 9GB a month - and that was some very heavy usage.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like my "new" rate is about average. Man that rate is pretty high Krom, I feel sorry for you.

I called the ISP and they won't budge on the price. Well, being the cheapskate that I am, I am probably going back to dial-up. I know of better ways to spend $120 a year. Now the fun part is finding a good dial-up provider. There are a bunch of crappy services out there like this one:
Does Leapfrog Internet offer newsgroups?
Leapfrog Internet does not currently offer newsgroup services to our
customers for three main reasons. First, we have found that most of the
third-party newsgroup services are simply unreliable; second, we have found
that the majority of newsgroup users are searching for pornographic
material; and last, a significant portion of newsgroup users are doing
nothing more than harvesting email addresses in order to send spam email. As
we have a very aggressive anti-spam policy, this does not go over well with
us, nor can we guarantee the quality of the newsgroups we provide.
I don't know about you but I feel like punching this guy. I find that Usenet is one of the most useful parts of the Internet. I have had countless technical questions answered from the people that post there. Much better than having to rely on a â??professionalâ?

thwart, there are some free usenet servers that everyone can access regardless of whether or not your ISP offers it.

I did a quick search and I did find some free servers but very few allow posting. I bet they are busy also. I think a paid usenet server should be included with your monthly bill.

Krom wrote:$70/mo for 512k/512k...... My ISP does offer 1.5/1.5... for $200/mo.
Those are SDSL (business) prices - Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line: service that provides equal bandwidth for both uploads and downloads(2 lane highway)

Unlike ADSL(cable too) (residential) prices - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line: service that provides greater bandwidth for downloads at the expense of upload speeds (see-saw)

Thanks for the info captain obvious. :P Yeah SDSL is all my ISP offers, even though they are using ADSL/2 modems that do up to 24 Mb / 2 Mb.

$14.95 a month for 1500/384 and no complaints.

I stopped getting cable when the 6 month promo went up and I went for DSL. Unless you do heavy downloading and uploading you dont need stinkin cable at the rate of an -arm-and-a-leg per month.

1500/384. testing comes out to 1100/120 and i'm gonna complain. price depends on what the market will bear. if there's competition the the price is usually a little lower and avgs. about the same for
everyone. trouble is the fcc and congress has to f*** with things and only make it worse. in connecticut the providers of dsl are limited. i can't get cable in the bldg i'm in so it's 74.95 for 24hr 7/365. it is a dedicated line though. wish verizon serviced dsl here. sigh!

i'll never go back to dialup. (unless i have to :))

i dunno... around here DSL and Cable rates are comparible, which makes it sorta a no brainer, especially with the speed comparison. cheapest i can get here is 24.99 for 256k (i looked into it finally), but mostly its 40 a month for 768 or 1 mb down .... just makes sense to take the 6 mb cable for the same price :) (and they just sent another email saying that they are upgraded again and going to be at 7 mb down soon)... i hate comcast as an entity, but i like fast internet.

if the only provider you can get charges an arm and a leg, well then you start sawing or fall asleep while downloading big files or viewing a really busy page.
