Modem install problem

I'm trying to put together a Compaq (0400h), Chipset : Intel i440BX/ZX, Processor : Intel Pentium III @ 498 MHz, 128 MB (2 x 64 SDRAM PC125 @ 125 MHz.)

It's running WinXP Home.

It had a NIC card in it but since he will be using dialup I am trying to install a modem.

I have tried 3 different modems and WinXP does not see any of them and when I go through "Add New Hardware" it does not see new hardware and when I try to manually install and install drivers, it still does not work.

I'm trying to install HSP56 Micro-Modem (PCTEL) modem

Any suggestions?

i know nothing about this card, but i do know that using older modems under xp can be a bit of a headache (actually using any legacy product xp can be an issue). it sounds like the card is not plug and pray, so windoze is not detecting the hardware. check the bios, old boards were flaky about these things too, i would wonder if the bios needs to be told that it is plug and pray windows compatible, and make sure that the resources are not conflicting

under xp when you open the device manager do you see an unkown device with a question mark anywhere? this usually means windows found something, didn't know what it was, so ignored it for you.

Nothing in Device mgr.

i'll ck the BIOS for Plug and "Pray".

I bought a controller modem and all is well.

It's been so long since I messed around w/ modems I forgot about the perils of "win" modems.
