I want to get a bigger LCD for Christmas (1600x1200 vs 1024x768) and I have a question concerning the implementation of HDCP in Windows Vista. When Windows Vista comes out, I do not want to just throw away a $550 LCD. That would be crazy. I want to know if HDCP can be enabled on the video card in order to prevent the need to buy a >$1000 HDCP Ready monitor. Now I want my PC to be Windows Vista Ready. Microsoft has an article here. Within the article is the following:
"HDCP applied inside the graphics chip
It is preferable that HDCP is applied inside the graphics chip, to remove the need to route unprotected digital signals to an external DVI chip."

So my question is, does this mean that HDCP can be activated by the GPU, and thus, Vista will not require a HDCP monitor?

This passage from that article worries me a bit.

When playing premium content such as HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD, PVP-OPM will be required to turn off or constrict the quality of unprotected DVI. As a result, a regular DVI monitor will either get slightly fuzzy or go black, with a polite message explaining that it doesn?t meet security requirements.

Microsoft is getting bolder in trying to force hardware changes onto people in the name of copy protection, it would seem.

its obvious that copy protection is beginning to spiral out of control. i can imagine the need to upgrade to biometrics soon so that there can't be ANY chance of using something you don't have the rights too.

I've yet to see any good reason for upgrading to Vista. This article just confirms my misgivings. Unless someone can give me some damn good reasons otherwise, I'm sticking with XP when it's released.

most of the reviews i have read is that vista is just a bigger bulkier version of xp anyway. (yes i know the differences so stfu before anyone starts.) the information i have heard does not make it sound like they have really made a lot of strides, but instead just beefed up the already heavy gui.

i have a vista preview package i got through the msdn... its in a pile around here somewhere. i just plain don't care.

someone was trying to tell me they felt it would be like going from 95 to 98, but i just responeded with: "yep, but 98 sux, had to wait for 98SE".

it remains to be seen.
