hehe... nice. Yeah, an old lady definitely couldn't set off an airbag- I tried once when I was a kid and couldn't.... you have to like damage the bumper to get it to go off.

for contact like that, you would have to find the impact sensors and smack them like that. they are usualy behind the front and rear bumpers, inside the trunk and just forward of the windshield in the engine compartment.snoopy wrote:hehe... nice. airbags are computer controlled, it take a dozen things into factor before they will deploy, small bumps or potholes will NOT set them off. it calculates Angle of impact, deceleration, inertia, just to mention a few. damage to a bumper will not neccesarily deploy them. its a matter of the type and amount of damage, plus when an airbags deploys they deflate immediately, they dont sit in your face like a big ballon. the ads a fake but funny none the less.

I thought air bags are tripped by mercury G-switch, a little like the now unused motion-sensitive seatbelts, which only lock when they detect heavy G's.snoopy wrote:hehe... nice. airbags systems are computer controlled. they are what is called a smart system, most new cars have 2-3 sensors in the front right behind the bumper mounts and 1 on the cowl, systems vary, some have side impact sensors for the side curtain bags, I know of no vehicle that has rear sensors. airbags will not deploy in a rear impact. the sensors are not mecury activated. too much chance of accidental deployment. depending on your brand of car there will be a PCM module that controls the system under either the dash at the center console, or under the passenger seat. most newer cars have occupant sensors in the seat that will deactivate or even lower the deployment speed of the passenger SRS(air bag) unit if the occupant does not have enough wight to deploy it. usually around 130lbs. child safety feature. it is a very complex system. all connectors are gold plated to prevent corrosion. and if a wire is cut or damaged in an accident. it must be replaced. you cannot repair SRS wiring. even seatbelt have small SRS units in them to take out the slack that most of us wear them. it is nothing to have $3,000-$4,000 in the replacement costs of an SRS system. so there is part of your auto systems class for the day

they are not mercury switches, as cuda said they have too much accidental tripping faults.
they typically are accelerometers <-- *spelling* that trip only after having instant G forces at a certain intensity and direction.
cuda, i belive i came across a vehicle that did have rear mounted sensors, because this particular vehicle was hit from the rear dead on. and the bags were deployed.... no frontal or side damage at all.... but id have to ask my Collison teacher again. all of my collision repair experience comes from 4 years + another 1/2 year after graduation working with him at my high school. i was one of his best students all 4 years. and a very high quality worker.

how the airbags are deployed varies greatly by the make and model of the vehicle. this benz undoubtedly has computer controlled sensors, a 94 pontiac sunfire will have a little button under the bumper (j/k). it was possible years ago to set off air bags on vehicles using a mere baseball bat, even if the car was parked, but times and technology have come a VEEEEEERRRRRRYYYYYY long way since then.
