I have been having difficulties getting the Donate interface working with this old version of phpBB. I have't given up yet but it doesn't look promising.

I sure would like to have any donations linked to the DBB.

I also need to seek nominations for a finance committee. What I envision is setting up the paypal account so I have access to the funds and 2-3 DBB's have access to view and verify any transactions related with donations to the DBB account.

Please don't submit nominations to this thread, I will create a thread for nominating and then take the top nominations and create a poll from them.

well.. you have the link up there that says descent BB ... just set up a paypal account. set up the donation link through there.. then use the url and a donation image and pluck it up top.

there's my 2 cents :)

(deidel set this up on his page recently... www.descent2.de )

Works for the SD.net board. You'll see a little paypal logo at the top right portion of the index, and in the headers.

Ok I successfully installed the Donate Mod on the DBB Test Board.

It's pretty easy to switch over as soon as everything else is in place.

One week ..

After one week we have a total of 20 votes! 17 for and 3 against.

This could be an expensive venture. At only 17 people it will cost about 10bucks a piece per six months! I sure would hae to move and after 6 months find myself holding the bag for a co-loaction fee!

I do have the donate mod installed and ready to implement. This MOD will interface with the DBB Database to reflect your donates IF it's handled thru the link, if it's a manual donation I enter that thru a little script on the backend.

RC has setup the server and installed a generic phpbb and proved out the setup. Nearly all is ready on his end!

We are ready if this is what you want!

suggest that something this big should be if possible posted as forum. i didn't know this was here for awhile. i saw the announcements forum and looked at some of the other topics but missed this one. use color to highlight? larger type? arrows saying "this is important ^&%%**^%'s so take a look?
i'm in that makes 18.

I added sometime to it, had to edit the database. I I set it for thirty days (I think).

It was a number that I copied from another poll set for thirty days :P

If it's not too late for it, could we get a concise list of our options, including pros and cons of each?

CLARIFICATION:

The DBB is not asking for donations to continue operations. I can and will keep the DBB running as long as there is a DBB'r other than myself.

A few years ago RL called me away and it has done so recently to the fine gentlemen that stepped up in my absence.

SickOne "Kevin" was blessing the community with a semi-dedicated server, the rate was ~$80 a month. Unless you are independently wealthy this is a burden that one individual should not bear considering there has never been a commercial advertisement on the DBB.

Xciter "Jim" was about to bless the DBB with an even greater arrangement.

After I moved the DBB to a shared hosting environment, I talbled a discussion as to the hosting arrangements which were TERRIBLE until the host rebalanced the load. Our service was TERRIBLE putting it extremely mildly.

Many DBB'rs had expressed a desire for an instantanous response of the DBB and therefore were willingt to offset the shared hosting fees (currently provided) for a dedicated or semi-dedicated server.

This is the thread that made it obvious what everyone wanted ...
phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=145043#145043

At the present moment Richard Cranium has setup a server and is ready to go. I did just get a PM from another DBB'r for a similar arrangement, if he desire to table it for everyone then this would be a good time to do it :)

It's late, I'm tired and most likely left out important infromation.

Kindest Regards,

Mike Sullivan

the present host is better now... but still terrible. hitches, loading times, or lack thereof makes moving through the forums difficult and time comsuming, and if it takes 10-20 bux for a handful of us every 6 months to make it work WELL for EVERYONE, then so be it! the willingness is there. (even if i can count it on one hand, people have expressed a willingness to shoulder the brunt on their own...)

we are talking about some people helping out by giving the SAME to LESS 'financially' than KB is already doing for us on his own, and since enough people have voiced their willingness to do so, it is worth it to jump to a better environment.

let's not turn off new members with a poor host, let's not turn off the occasional poster (read: lurker YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE :)) or the old timers who have years invested here.

let us not forget the current 6DOF projects on the horizon, when there will be a buzz a-flying about for these new and wonderful 'games/mods'. KB said it himself, its ready to go, so let's 'get 'er done!'

fire up the DONATE mod, and let me throw my money in the pot so we can keep the dbb rolling on and on!

/my 2 cents!!! i'm going to bed now. goodnight dbb!

I actually don't care whether we do this or not. However, it looks like it's going to happen, and as such I'll throw $100 in the hat as a two-year donation. If we're all still here in another two years I'll probaby do the same. I just don't want to promise $50/year because either I or the DBB might get hit by a bus or something.

Yep, it's time to turn on the Donate button.

Posted: Mon Dec 19, 2005 8:33 am
by KoolBear
Done,

I have turned on the donate button. As soon as we have the funds to pay for the server. We we get the ball rolling.

For those desiring to send snail mail funds please email me at descentbb at gmail dot com!

If you enter a payment online it is automatically added to the DBB database with yourname attached, at the bottom of the index page is a link to show who has donated what. There is an ability to donate annomously if desired, that's annomous to the DBB in general but the admin will know who you are :)

Any issues PLEASE post them to the DBB feedback forum!

I'm willing to host the board on my web server box. It's a p2.4 1GB Ram Linux box located in Los Angeles that I run a few web sites on. I have 2TB of bandwidth each month and I don't use nearly that much so I'd offer the hosting for free, it would just go to waste otherwise.

I'm not sure what exactly it means, but as long as you keep good, uninterrupted service, I think it's a good idea

Where do you co-locate your server?

Posted: Mon Dec 19, 2005 6:26 pm

I don't co-locate, I rent a server box at dwhs.net

The current server works fine for me. This guy Bigman is offering a very nice service for free. It might be to the DBB community's benefit to use his services. I can't chip any money in, but I still said "yes".
