I love it, haven't played it in a long time. When I was in college we had a particularly brutal group of players and we played usually once a week. I did really well too. Not because I was good at it but because the other guys drank a lot more than I did. It was not uncommon for me to leave a game at 1AM with $200 in my pocket and head straight to the grocery store. It was a great way to alleviate the stree of being a poor college student.
i play as Palzon on pokerstars.com
I'm just learning at this point. Prior to this summer i had zero interest. I watched a few Celebrity Poker Showdown Eps. Got interested. I watched the World Series Main Event. Got real interested.
Did you know the main event is the highest paying sports event period? The winner earned 7.5 million.
BTW, I've read Wittgenstein's Poker. Good read.

LOL Duper!
I lost a poker tournament to my pastor. Texas hold 'em, we were nearly equal in money in the finals. He pushed me all in and he had barely enough left for an ante next hand. I had 2 pair (Kings, 2's) and thought I had him, but the last card to come up was a queen. That gave him kings and queens. NUTS!
But I eliminated my other pastor earlier in the tournament...
It can be fun as long as you're not losing money at it... or only losing a small enough amount that you don't really care.

Palz, look me up as 'Wastemore'.
I play a lot of tourny's, usually about 3-4 a day. Been playing for years, but just discovered on-line poker about a year ago.
I'm gonna pat myself on the back-;)
I played 17 tourny's this week on-line and two live tourny's at our local poker room.
The results?
On-line...
8 firsts
2 seconds
4 thirds
Got bumped out of the others in 4th,5th and 8th. The one I got bumped out of in forth went down like this-
AK on the button, blinds 100/200- everyone limped to me and I made it 800 to go. Position 3,4 and 6 called. The flop comes Ac-4h-Ks, position 3(under the gun) bets 400, 4 folds and 6 re-raises to 800. I re-raise both 1500(flopped top two and wanted the draws out) position 3 folds and 6 re-raises me.. At this point the only thing he could possibly have is a solid draw,a set (I knew he didn't call my pre-flop with 44) and if he had the set, he would have went all-in to protect it against the draw. No go, I put him on Ax, top pair, marginal kicker. I re-raised him all-in to force the fold,, he calls. The cards turn and he had Q/3o.. I started laughing at the call.. turn was 10... can you guess what the river was? Yeah, a J. The guys busted me with the worst call/bet I've ever seen and caught runner-runner for the straight. Then told me I needed to learn how to play poker.
Played 2 tourny's at the(wednesday & last night) casino with a 57.00 buy-in.. Took first in the first one for 2300.00 prize and tied up for third(big stacks busted us both in the same hand so we both got 3rd place money) and took a bit over 580.00 in the second.
Poker took the place of D3 for me.
I play way too much, but since I discovered on-line- I stopped going to the casino to play.. I do it from the office so the wife doesn't much mind.

liked the story, barry - bad beat for sure.
one thing you should know. i only use play money. see, i need the real money for rent and such. even in the low stakes stuff...i don't like all this credit card jazz and online accounts. call me old fashioned.
i've only been playing for one month. tonight i played in my first tournament. 3 tournys actually. i got 2nd in the first two and won the last one. i know im not good yet, but i dont think i stink.
very addictive.
actually the tourny i won was pretty interesting. for much of the game i was the short stack. in heads up i was winning the whole time until the second to last hand. that nearly evened us up. i had a pretty bad beat when he made two pair on the river. next hand i tried to sucker the guy in and got a lucky turn card...

love tha game, but havent played in months,
because of a beaten I got
it took the last of my money,..
I was dealt 9 9
flop was 9 9 10
one player went all in,
he had a bigger stack than me,
I call with my four 9`s, was
pretty shure the pot was mine.
turn was 10
river was 3.
I lost
He had been dealt 10 10.
havent playd since..
still love the game though

it was the only time i ever heard the phrase used where it 'almost' made sense.
poker is fun for friends, but im just not good enouch for online play. (it doesnt help that i barely get texas hold em, i just throw money in when someone says its time to do it... )

Palz,
you played that Ak horribly.
The blinds were 75/150 and you only called AK?! and with over 10k in chips? Ouch! You beat yourself down, buddy..
That hand should have played out like this...
Palz posts sb.
blah blah blah.
Palzon Raises 1500 on the SB
BB folds.
See, it's better to rake the blinds than just check/call and get beat down with two pair.
I'm not sure why you allowed 4/7o to limp in?! Greed?
If you raised big and he did call... you're first to act, put the decision on him.. push that stack with top pair and the A kicker. He can only put you on a Kx with a bet like(esp. if you raised pre-flop) that and he would have folded. Instead, you re-raised him the minimum bet?! middle pair heads-up is worth a minimum call. Now, you've allowed him to see another **two**cards for dirt freeking cheap and he outdrew ya..
What it looks like to me is that you got greedy and wanted to get paid as much as you could with AK.. instead, you've allowed him to draw out for DIRT FREEKING cheap and river you.
Dude, he rivered you...
You had AK and he had 4/7.. what was he even doing in the hand? He was there because you *let* him by simply calling the blind.
You could have also check-raised him after he fired out a *minimum bet*.. I don't mean 3xbb.. I mean 10-15xbb. He would have folded.. esp.if you fired out a large pre-flop bet. If he was a loose player I would have simply pushed and not let him see another card..
As rude as this might sound, that wasn't a bad beat at all.. it was a bad play.
You totally lost control of the hand by-
1. not raising pre-flop
2. not raising a large amount post-flop/pre-turn
3. not raising a large amount post-turn.
by the river it was too late.
2nd hand, same problem.. what if, instead of an 8.. a K came out(making somenody's straight)?? or another diamond to make someones flush? You won that hand, but not because you played it right, because you lucked out.(sorry- it's true)
As soon as that 6 hit I would have pushed.. they would *have* to put you on 66/A6 and know they were beat with a set or two pair.. instead, you let them draw on you for cheap again.
Knock that off!!
Make sense?

barry, you are absolutely right about the first hand. no question i let him draw out. your analysis is spot on and helpful. but it wasn't entirely greed. it was after 5 AM, so it was greed plus hoping to end it quick versus winning by raking blinds.
second hand, you may be right, but i'm not sure. part of what dictated my play at that point was his style of play. in the hand, notice that he checked with a pair of aces after i checked? he was slowplaying regularly thru the night.
i'm not pushing all-in without having some idea if i have the best hand or not - especially against someone prone to playing possum. i checked the 6 on the turn because I was confident that he couldn't beat three of a kind and wasn't playing a draw.
I put him on a pair of Jacks or a pair of Aces. I knew he had only about a 4 percent chance of making three of a kind on the river. if i had pushed all-in on the turn he would have folded for sure. so whether it was king or an eight or whatever he felt helped him (as long as it wasn't an ace or Jack), i was hoping he would get some help on the river and call my all-in.
whatdya think?

Palz,
In the second hand, he was trying to slow-play a pair. LOL! Lots of slow-players on-line.. they watch too much WSOP and think they'll get paid off if they slow-play. It's bad news!
There were no FD's up, but there were two straights at the turn.. when he bet, I would have at least checked raised him to see if he had something worth staying in on, or if he was just trying to buy it right there. But you didn't.. instead, you slow-played your set and it paid off. But, what if the river would have made his set.. or a straight for him?! It would have made me *more* nervous that he was a slow player, what if he was slow-playing a set of j's. In poker, it's best to be pessimistic rather than optimistic.. it turns the game from gambling to a skill game. I don't like chance.. I'm not a gambler.
You probably did play that hand right and I'm being overly pessimistic, but in order to stay ahead you have to be. If these two hands are an indication of how you normally play, I'd say you're playing your cards rather than the players. It's not a bad thing, it's very, very common with new players. You need to learn to take control of the hand!
Example..
you have Ajd(forget position, it'll take too long to type out the factors). the blinds are 50/100.. everyone limps and it's to you... Raise!! Not only do you most likely have the best hand going in.. you're telling them.. "I have the best hand and I'm not going to let limpers in".. you get two callers-
The flop comes 2c4d10d. you have nothing but the nut flush draw.. 1st guy bets 200.. the second guy folds.. do you fold.. call? Heck no.. you re-raise to 400!!
this does a couple of things-
1. The most important- you've taken control of the hand!!!
2. you're building the pot so when you hit, you're going to get paid.. you have a million outs and thisgame is about odds and they're in your favor.
3. if you miss, he's going to check his 10x on the turn card (I promise) allowing you to see another card for free!!
Yes, free.. here's why..
if you just called his 200(2 big bets) bet at the flop.. he would have bet 600(6 big bets) on the turn for a total of 8 big bets to see the river because he'd know you were chasing.
This way, it costs you 4 big bets to see the turn *AND* the river.. half as much.
By re-raising him right at the flop, it makes him think his 10 isn't strong and he might even fold out, allowing you to take down the hand right there.
Does that make sense?
You're doing well, Palz.. congrats!! Taking down(or placing)in a couple of tourny's is good work! You've only been playing a month? You'll do well at this game..
What is your hand % to flop, do you know?

One of the things Gordon argues is that limping in is almost always wrong. It makes sense, because right away you force people to fold.
as far as hand % to flop...you mean like percentage chance to flop a flush, straight, pair, set, etc? some of them i know offhand. for the rest i use a book i read: Phil Gordon's Little Green Book I refer to the book often as I try to learn.
I am new and i do make mistakes because of that. I know I'm not good yet, but I want to be. And I'm willing to take the right steps to learn. study, not just practice
