I am at my wits end... Where can I find cheap rambus?

Post by WarAdvocat »

From what I can see, I could buy Mushkin Black PC4000 CAS3-4-4 for less than an equivalent amount of the cheapest RAMBUS on the market...or Mushkin Black PC3200 CAS2-2-2 for about the same...

This wouldn't be a problem if I could afford to just upgrade my mobo, but the cost of the motherboard is the cost of the RAM so it's a wash at the moment. I could have a new mobo...and no RAM, or I can have RAM and no new mobo...

Can anyone help make this more affordable? I've googled and googled...no joy.

Ignore Mobius, and save up.

Unless he's actually offering to donate new hardware.

I am with flip, ignore the ignoramous :P

I bought Rambus after knowing all about it's obselescence(sp) and love it.

As for getting it cheap, well that it is not, but Muskin is the best out there for Rambus IMHO(I got some bad sticks from Kingston, kinda biased) so, I'd suggest just saving up as well :)

;) Thanks for your scornful, demeaning words of Patronizing and Condescending (that's when you talk down to someone) "Wisdom", Mobius.

I didn't follow any 'dead-end technology path', I bought a P4 system before the DDR motherboards were widely available (if at all).

Thus the choice was essentially a P3 <= 1ghz + SDRAM, OR a p4 @ 1.7ghz + RDRAM. In fact, when I bought this system....The only OS choice Dell was offering was WinME. Yeah, that was another mistake, going Dell, but hell, my company bought the system for me, I didn't have to pay...so I had to go with what they were buying.

Yes, I knew about the licensing issues with RAMBUS, but I figured that eventually the price issue would be ironed out by competition with DDR when it went into swing. My mistake? I forgot the proverb "Never underestimate the power of Human Stupidity (and greed) (and never forget it cuts both ways)".

I figured I'd just have to Save up... Sigh. Luckily I should be getting a nice 1.8 ghz system w/ DDR to salvage and rebuild soon, so I guess I can just pop my drives in there and stay sane until I can afford 2 512MB rambus slabs.

Unfortunately, yes, I have Stress.

Average price for a 256 MB PC800 RDRAM Economy Module is 90-110.

And I suppose if "twice as expensive per unit as a nice stick of DDR" is "cheap enough" then Rambus is "cheap enough". I guess it's all a matter of whether you have the money.
