SCUBA diving :)

This past Saturday, January 14, I went scuba diving for the first time in my life. Since I forgot the appropriate swimwear, I got to wear a shorty wet suit. A shorty is not full body, but it covers slightly more than what a t-shirt and shorts would.

Here we are, waiting to go in. The instructors there are preparing the vests and tanks.

Here I am with a few peers, learning the basic skills.

More learning. I am the one in the wet suit to the right of the picture.
This was a church function, mainly a priesthood quorum activity, and so the other guys I'm with are fellow priesthood holders/friends

. The girls are the adult leader's daughters, and he just took them along. Anyway, I went and had a
fantastic time, totally enjoying myself and the experience. Go scuba diving; it's a once in a lifetime experience!

I love it, but it is such an expensive hobby.

Diving rocks. Here's the proper way to dive: go tropical, bring an expensive underwater camera, and be an excellent photographer:

That's the gallery of one of the two best female Descent players out there. I attribute her 6dof diving abilities and her quick shutter finger to Descent.

I got a YMCA certification in 1980 then a PADI certification in 1993. I think my favorite dive ever was off Little Cayman North Wall. We parked in 80 feet of water then over the edge we went, straight to the bottom. We were skimming along the bottom for a hundred yards or so and saw this rift ... when we came up on it the wall dropped 6000 feet straight down. My gosh I almost lost my balance and fell off the edge into the abyss. Unbelivable and incredible.

PADI open water cert some years back.
One of the best memories was getting neutrally bouyant in about 40 feet of water and just hanging there, watching some of the dive group still coming down from the boat and a bunch of others another 40 feet down on the bottom. Caribbean so the water was pretty clear all the way down. Like flying without the wind in your face.
Way cool.

For some reason I have a great fear of being underwater.Scuba diving has always fascinated me, but I just don't think I can get over my fear to try it out.

In the right location, snorkelling is superior as it is far cheaper, you can stay out longer, and there's no extra weight.
But yeah, scuba is cool.

I've been SCUBA diving 3 times in three different reefs off the coast of the dominican republic

Didn't have enough money to get certified though.

In the RIGHT location, you can do both and reap the maximal benefits of both.
BTW, what's this about weight? I'm neutrally buoyant when I dive. Weight isn't an issue. Buoyancy management, however, can be.
So who wants to do a D3 diving LAN? I've been Padi certified for years now!

Yep! Padi certifieed in '88 and have almost 70 dives logged. Most of them are in San Diego, which is very cold and poor visibility. I also have done quite a few night dives. Those are a blast. I have to say that my favorite experience is when a seal pup tried to play with us. That was fun.

I also have a fear of going deep underwater. I freak out when my ears pop at the 6' deep end of the swimming pool.

Your certification training takes care of that. You learn ear clearing techniques. I have been down to 140 feet with no problems. Well, I did get a tad narc'd but that was kind of fun.

Padi certified but never went out. Most of my best memories are when I was stationed at Pendleton and went with a buddy to snorkle the kelp beds north of LA.
Maybe now the divorce is done with I might get some gear and log some dive trips. Are there good looking chicks on dive trips?

Padi certified in Guam in '92, adv. diver cert.
Last dive November 2005 in Thailand (had an even better experience snorkling in Viet Nam a week earlier though!)

When were at Pendleton? I grew up just south of there.

We missed each other by about a year. I moved to Rancho Bernardo (a northern suburb of San Diego) in 1969. We lived just a few miles from NAS Miramar.

Nope. SCUBA: Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. I find it hard for you not to know this acronym.
