Laptop screen problem

I have a friend who has a Toshiba Tecra 8100 running Win 2000.

His screen goes black but he can normally get it back by using the \"LCD Display stretch\" (function key + F5).

Now that \"fix\" isn't working.

Is the screen gone? Any ideas?

Laptops are weird. Your best bet is to reinstall Windows and all the factory drivers. You could probably put the laptop in standby and take it out and have it come back to life.

I just got the laptop from my friend so I can see what's going on. I'll post after I play w/ it.

I'd check to see if there are any updated monitor drivers. If not, just get the latest ones off of their website and re-install them.

If that doesn't work, try outputting the display to another monitor (like the one for your computer) or out to a TV. That should help prove if its a hardware issue or software.

I now have his laptop and noticed that I could see a faint Desktop so I used the Function + F5 key got a normal Desktop.

From what I understand it would either startup \"dark\" or go dark while using and the F5 key would bring it up again.

Don't understand why it changes.

I have turned it on and off a couple of times and all seems well.

I'll ck out drivers.

Thanks

Are there any physical controls for contrast and brightness on the exterior of the laptop? Most I've seen you can hold down the function key and press the up and down arrow keys to brighten the display.

No controls on unit and Function key + up & down doesn't work.

I seems posibly to be the \"backlight\". I can use the Function key + F5 and get the screen to \"come up\" but it won't hold.

However, it is working w/ an exterior monitor.

The backlight is most likely just turning off (the alternative is hardware failure, gotta have hope :P). Try a different power profile in the control panel.

When you say it won't hold, does it turn off after the same period of time after you get it to turn back on?
