New PC parts ordered today

Well, the northbridge on my Leadtek K7NCR18-D crapped out on me a couple of weeks ago. Since nobody sells nforce2 boards anymore, I decided that I might as well upgrade.

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Asus A8N5X
1GB Corsair PC3200 (2x512) Dual Channel kit
eVGA Geforce 6800GS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express
Fortron Source 450W ATX12V PSU

$680 after S/H and sales tax from newegg. Hopefully I'll have my parts by friday. :)

Hopefully next month when the Marketpro computer show comes back into town, I can nab an nforce2 board. That way I can drop in my old XP2800+ and the 512MB PC2700 RAM that I was previously using and upgrade her from that duron 800 and that POS Gigabyte mobo that she's stuck with. (Damn thing has a shotty third memory slot. Refuses to read memory correctly.)

edit: Pictures taken so far:

Just waiting on the RAM to show up, though given the weather conditions its likely that it won't show until Monday.

Think you must be doing something wrong there man. That stuff does not smell of anything in normal operation. What you doing with it? Slapping it all over the place? Remember, even on a heat-spreader style CPU core, you STILL only need a tiny, tiny, TINY amount of the stuff.

aye, about two beads do nicely, and if you get close enough, there is a nice smell as it bakes =)

I have never been able to smell arctic silver or any other thermal compound \"baking\" in my computer. Granted I have been using watercoolers for ages. I do not think you should be able to smell anything from your computer other then the \"new computer smell\". If you can smell arctic silver either you put on too much, or it is getting too hot. When I apply arctic silver to a flip chip CPU, I use a portion smaller then a single grain of rice, and every time I have removed the heatsink after that it always perfectly covered the core with only the slightest excess coming out of the sides. For a chip with a heat spreader I have to use a little more, but I spread it around so it barely covers the entire top of the chip.

And no, I'm not unlocking anything. This rig is plenty fast as it is....as soon as my freakin' RAM gets here!

edit: Half an hour later and it finally arrived. Delivered by UPS.....but its in a FedEx box! Hmm, maybe thats why it took them so long. :P

1024x768 (happy now Krom? ;))

498.14 Descent3 v1.4
289 Min
721 Max
537 Second 1
721 Second 2
568 Second 3
417 Second 4
495 Second 5
460 Second 6

-framecap 0 -nosound -nonetwork -nooutragelogo -pilot MD-2389 -nointro -timetest secret2.dem

Just for those that are curious... :)

Turning on 4x FSAA (can go up to 8x, but 4 is plenty IMO) and 8x ANI (can go upto 16x) only drops frames enough to tack on an extra second to the timetest. This card is freakin' awesome! I'll try and tweak it down a little further, but as long as I get a constant 60 I'm happy.

453.95 Descent3 v1.4
251 Min
629 Max
453 Second 1
619 Second 2
629 Second 3
375 Second 4
426 Second 5
472 Second 6
405 Second 7

1280x960

-framecap 0 -nosound -nonetwork -nooutragelogo -pilot MD-2389 -nointro -nosparkles -nomotionblur -timetest secret2.dem

I also found out that setting the texture quality to Performance rather than quality actually makes the timetest run LONGER. Go figure. ;)
