Cable modem recomendations?

First off, DSL is not a good option as I am to far away from the CO... I have tried the DSL here and it is not good, remote CO ect... not a good gaming connection.

Cable connect is GREAT here for me at this time. I have a SB3100 cable modem presently but it has started to reset all by itself when I put a heavy load on it. (torrents) The modem is rented and comcast tech has recomended I swap it out for another one at the cable store. SO. Do I rent or buy? If I buy, what do you recomend?
Here is the list of cable modems they posted on thier web page, note that most have problems with upgradeability.

Here is a transcript of our chat... now this is a little funny towards the end, thats why I posted it. Please excuse the typos.

Problem : Connection/Other

JohnU > Thank you for contacting Comcast, my name is John. How may I assist you today?

Scott > Hi John, doing well today?

JohnU > Yes, how are you doing Scott?

Scott > doing well also.

Scott > My problem is

Scott > when I an doing a lot of downloading, my cable modem will drop out

Scott > complete power down and restart.

Scott > all by it self

JohnU > I'm sorry to hear that Scott, can you elaborate on 'a lot of downloading', how much are you downloading?

Scott > well

Scott > how do I state this...

Scott > say I have a download that is comming down at 60kbs and also uploading at 20 kbps, this problem arrises

Scott > or smaller values

JohnU > Ok, is your computer directly connected to the modem Scott?

Scott > no, and I have removed the router and the problem persists.

JohnU > Ok, well your connection is working excellent so you may have a modem problem arising. What you can do is go down to a local payment center and swap your modem for another one, and if the problem still occurs with the new modem, then call in to schedule an appointment with a technician so that they can determine the issue.

Scott > yes, the connection is excellant I must say.

Scott > so when I do this they will not ask my 50 questions ect.?

Scott > Can you tell me where my nearest payment center is?

JohnU > No, just tell them that your modem resets on its own, and since you are renting this modem they should be able to provide you with another one.

JohnU > One moment please Scott.

JohnU > The closest one to you is:

JohnU > Tacoma Cable Store
5401 6th Avenue, Suite 505
Tacoma, WA 98406
Phone: 877-824-2288
Hours: Monday thru Saturday 9am to 6pm CLOSED Sunday

JohnU > I suggest calling before coming in to ensure that they have modems available for exchange.

Scott > If I were to purchase my own modem, can you recomend one? Or are there any issues with me doing this?

JohnU > You can purchase your own modem if you'd like just make sure it is one of the approved modems listed in this link: http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.j ... odems17905

Scott > ahhh, very good.

Scott > A transcript of this chat will be emailed to me?

JohnU > Do you want it to be e-mailed to you Scott?

Scott > please

JohnU > What e-mail address would you like it sent to?

Scott > one more thing

Scott > I see multiple modems on this list that say they can't be upgraded to comply with docsis... it looks like most of the modems on this list say that. I don'y understand...?

JohnU > What don't you understand? Why they cannot be upgraded?

Scott > it recommends that they not be purchased for use with comcast... but they do not need to be removed... so the ones that do NOT say can not be upgrqaded to comply with docsis 1.1 are approved modems?

JohnU > It just means that those modems cannot be upgraded to meet the minimum requirements required for the Internet Service, if you are to purchase one, select one that does not indicate that it cannot be upgraded.

Scott > ok, thanks for your help John, you have been great. You saw the email address?

Scott > Have a good night

JohnU > Thank you for contacting Comcast. If you need assistance in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us through Live Chat or E-mail (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) simply visit www.comcast.net and select Help or call us at 1-888-COMCAST. Have a great evening!

Scott > hehehe

Scott > one more thing?

JohnU > Alright.

Scott > lol

Scott > if I do chose to get mt rented modem replaced at the cable store, are they going to give me another one like this SB3100 or an approved modem that can be upgrqaded to comply with docsis 1.1 ? :)

JohnU > They will provide you with a modem that meets the requirements for the Internet Service.

Scott > thats rather ambiguous... :)

Scott > this one does... but cant be upgraded. I will see what happens at the cable store. :)

Scott > Good night. :)

JohnU > Have a good night Scott.

JohnU > Analyst has closed chat and left the room

heh! I was just going to tell you not to get the Motorola wireless one that my parents got. I didn't like the firewall...plus for some reason chat doesn't work on their network, and I think it's because of the Cable gateway. I can't connect to IRC or MSN rooms. lol

We have a SB5100, on Comcast in Lake Tapps.
Were hooked with 4 pc's and 3 xbox's live, and it handles it fine.

Stable connect, and I've never had a problem with it.

If ya want it cheap use Ebay

Hmm, when I exchanged modems at a Comcast store, they didn't give me a choice. I just gave them mine, and they gave me a different one. If you're lazy, you can probably get a tech to actually come to your house and replace it for you. Otherwise, remember to bring your current power adapter when you go to exchange.

Motorola SB5100 or Terayon TJ715x are both very good modems. Buy, don't rent. They only cost 40 bux to the cable co, and the most I've seen them for is 70 at wal-mart.

Contact ComCast asking for modems that are compatible with their network. Then, find something other than your current modem that can take simultaneous upload and download.

You can get cable modems at places like Circuit City and Best Buy.

Thanks everyone, I visited the local cable store and swaped out my modem
for what they supply now, a SB5101. Seems to work fine, life is good again. :)
