Mac Help - Basic

After only having demo versions to play, I finally got an original Descent II disc. I'm not a power user. I can't program and I don't know how to hack, and I love this game. Now, I'm still stuck playing D2X Demo which won't go past level 4. I use a 1.25 GHz iMac running OS 10.3.9 and the Descent II that I loaded from the disc won't play even with the disc still in the drive - Classic warning is I don't have Foriegn File Access installed at classic startup and the game won't play. :? Please Help!

Well. I fiddled around and I'm not sure if I'm on my way or worse off. I re-installed everything according to a post on versiontracker for D2XL. It starts up and there are more options in the set up, although they don't all accept customizing, such as adding keyboard commands, but when I start a game, it almost immediately freezes with some sort of polygon error message.
:o Somebody--Help Me!

Yeah, don't use the original Descent II program to play Descent 2. Use the d2x-xl program that you downloaded
This is what the directory thing should look like when you are done:

/Descent II/d2x-xl (the new application)
/Descent II/Descent II (the old application, don't use)
/Descent II/d2x.ini
/Descent II/Read Me - Descent II
/Descent II/Register with MacPlay
/Descent II/Data/
/Descent II/Data/robots.mvl
/Descent II/Data/secret.sgb
/Descent II/Data/water.pig
/Descent II/Data/alien1.pig
/Descent II/Data/alien2.pig
/Descent II/Data/groupa.pig
/Descent II/Data/hoard.ham
/Descent II/Data/ice.pig
/Descent II/Data/intro.mvl
/Descent II/Data/inventory.bmp
/Descent II/Data/other.mvl
/Descent II/Data/D2CHAOS.HOG
/Descent II/Data/D2CHAOS.MN2
/Descent II/Data/d2x-xl.hog
/Descent II/Data/d2x.log
/Descent II/Data/d2xtracker.pl
/Descent II/Data/default.plr
/Descent II/Data/descent.cfg
/Descent II/Data/DESCENT.HI
/Descent II/Data/descent.hog
/Descent II/Data/descent.pig
/Descent II/Data/descent.tex.eng
/Descent II/Data/descent.tex.ger
/Descent II/Data/DESCENT2.HAM
/Descent II/Data/DESCENT2.HOG
/Descent II/Data/DESCENT2.S11
/Descent II/Data/DESCENT2.S22
/Descent II/Data/fire.pig
/Descent II/Data/CHAOS.HOG
/Descent II/Data/CHAOS.MSN
/Descent II/Data/D2-2PLYR.HOG
/Descent II/Data/D2-2PLYR.MN2
Macintosh HD/Library/Frameworks/SDL.framework/

Thanks, but I'm not quite running yet

The directory contents you sent was very helpful. I have almost everything and a few items needed to be moved into the Data folder from elsewhere. Following are the items I am missing, and I did search my whole drive with no luck.
/Descent II/Data/secret.sgb
/Descent II/Data/hoard.ham
/Descent II/Data/inventory.bmp
/Descent II/Data/descent.pig
/Descent II/Data/CHAOS.MSN
I tried to run it again even though the above 5 files are missing and the error message I get as soon as the game starts is Invalid Polygon Model.
How can I obtain those missing files? Is there somewhere I can download them or can you, or anyone, send them to me?
Thanks
PS I am a Mac user, I am trying to correct my user name to [Mac]Rozako

Still can't play

:( I am still missing the following files and the error message is still at the very beginning of the game says \"invalid polygon'
/Descent II/Data/secret.sgb
/Descent II/Data/hoard.ham
/Descent II/Data/inventory.bmp
/Descent II/Data/descent.pig
/Descent II/Data/CHAOS.MSN

and now I'm wondering if I have a system compatability issue. The current versions of D2X-XL list OS 10.4 and Universal Binary as requirements. That's not me. I have an iMac which running 10.3.9 and I don't have intel inside.
Where :?: can I get the above files, and even then, will I be able to play on my machine, or would I first have to upgrade to OS 10.4?

The descent.pig, chaos.msn is for playing Descent 1 missions. The hoard.ham is for a multiplayer gametype and not needed. I have no idea what the secret.sgb is. The inventory.bmp was needed for a previous version but I guess you don't need it anymore as it is no longer in the Mac OS X download.

It says it is a Universal Binary because that means that it is universal to PowerPC and Intel. So you can run it. As for running on 10.4 only, I do not know. I advise upgrading to 10.4 anyway. Maybe Diedel can help or whoever is doing the porting.

And the reason I have a [MAC] in front of my name is because I am part of the Apple Corps clan which [MAC] is their label. I just so happen to create my username with the [MAC] title whenever ago I joined this forum.

Time to upgrade?

I've been putting off going to 10.4 but if that's what I need to do so I can play, I guess I have to take the leap. I'm not a power user and even letting the archive and install do its thing makes me nervous. Long live Super Duper.
Thanks for your help again.
And where's that guy been hiding?

No idea.

But you don't need to archive. There is an upgrade option.
